Do Bloggers Dream of Richard Zednik?

At last, I've uncovered the super secret formula that the NHL uses for handing out suspensions.
(Previous Suspension + Media Outcry - Player's "Star"* Power + Number of Bowel Movements Colin Campbell Has Had in Previous 48 Hours) X Random Number Picked Out of a Hat by a Monkey.
* As determined by Supreme Overlord, His Excellency, Commissioner Gary Bettman.
How else can we explain the fact that the NHL gave Chris Pronger a head-scratching EIGHT game suspension for his stomping of Ryan Kesler when Chris Simon got THIRTY games for the exact same thing.
Is Chris Pronger a repeat offender? Yes.
Has Chris Pronger proven himself to be a danger and threat to other players? Yes.
So, then, why the double standard? Was it because the media didn't cry for blood nearly as much? Is it because Pronger is a player that the NHL desparately wants to be in the NHL? Is it because Gary Bettman fears Brian Burke?
The sad thing is that there would have been NO suspension if the folks at TSN didn't call out the NHL out. We'll give a round of applause to the MSM for this one, as they utilized their assets and investigative wherewithall to show the public just what the NHL 'missed'.

I rarely have dreams that I can remember, but I certainly had a strange one last night.
It involved Richard Zednik and I as roommates in some apartment. (Somehow, his wife wasn't anywhere to be found). I was taking care of Zednik after another awful injury, and trying to comfort him from his depression.
Zednik had also recovered from cancer, and was wondering when all the pain would end. He had a hard time getting to sleep because of the pain, so I gave him some 'illegal?' drugs to calm him down. For some reason, I didn't want to give him the pills, but he convinced me. Who can resist a sad Zednik face?
Then, after he went to sleep, I went into the living room and starting playing video games from a MASSIVE collection.
Yeah, WTF, eh?

How would you like it if 12,000 people showed up at your birthday?
Well, the Giants/Bruins game last night had Gordie Howe celebrate his 80th birthday with the team he has a minority stake in. Yes, the guy is uber-popular and still draws a crowd.
OK, so his real birthday is not until March 31st, but it was a good excuse for a nice ceremony. With the Canucks sucking as much as they have, the Giants are giving us Vancouver hockey fans something better to watch :)
As for Howe, I saw him at the game on Friday (vs. the Cougars) and he's still looking good. About 1-2 years ago, he seemed to have aged ten years at once and looked rather fragile and weak. On Friday, he seemed to look good and still looked like he could bodycheck a few players through the boards.

How often does a Canadian get to take a total n00b to a hockey game? I'm talking about somebody who has never seen a hockey game and knows little about the sport other than it is played on ice.
Now, there are quite a few Canadians who don't like/watch hockey (be a patriot and report them to your local RCMP dispatch), but these people at least have a basic knowledge of the sport. Even my Gramma, who thinks hockey is a violent bloodbath *sigh* knows who Wayne Gretzky and Markus Naslund are.
Thus, it was quite a new experience for me to escort my girlfriend and some of her relatives from England to last night's tilt between the Vancouver Giants and Prince George Cougars. These people know and love 'footy' (obviously), and didn't even know hockey teams existed in the UK, nor did they remember the Theoren Fleury hurricane that tore through the British Isles.
Thankfully, they Brits quite enjoyed the experience, and were really looking forward to the game in the first place. It makes me wonder how other Brits would take to the game if they had some live exposure to it. Hell, they love Rugby, so why not hockey?
The Giants totally outclassed the Cougars (4-2 score, over 50 shots on goal for the Giants), and the game was fast-paced. The only black mark was the lack of an actual fight (which they hoped to see). Garet Hunt, who is smaller than pre-baby Christina Aguilera, challenged Magnusson, a HUGE Swede. The Chicken Swede promptly clucked away and Hunt got a misconduct. It was great to booooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Magnusson the whole 3rd period.
Now, hosting foreigners to a hockey game requires some patience, and it helps to compare hockey to whatever sport (soccer is easy) they know and love. There will be quite a few questions that seem odd, or just seem hard to answer because you never needed/thought about the answer to them. We know what Icing is, but explaining it can be much harder than you think
Some of the more interesting questions I remember
1. How long is a player allowed to be on the ice?
2. Do the players get teamed into set units? (think line combinations) Do they always stick together?
3. How do the players know who is supposed to go onto the ice? (It's hard to see the coaches barking instructions)
4. Why the hell are there blimps inside the arena? (Btw, the woman in front of me caught a prize from them. It was ... $2 off of a haircut. Ummm, is that it?)
5. When can players change on/off the ice? (Imagine soccer with on-the-fly changes? Heh)
All in all, they were more content to sit back and just enjoy the experience, so I ended up fielding far fewer questions than I thought I would be answering ... At least they didn't ask me to explain ICING.
That reminds me, I also caught a t-shirt for the first time in my life. Of course, it was for some stupid tool company, and it was bright white. Two strikes and your out! What a gyp.

Michal Repik Gets Rocked

I've heard about all sorts of new injuries thanks to my many years following hockey. ACL tears, MCL tears, ruptured spleens, third grade concussions, etc...
A broken eardrum, however, is not one you'd ever expect to see in the game of hockey.
Unfortunately for Giants fans, Michal Repik appears to have suffered a broken eardrum (ouch!) thanks to a hit by the Everett Silvertips' Dane Crowley.
Now, I haven't seen a replay of the hit, so I can't comment on whether the hit was dirty or not.
It's just too bad that the Giants, and the Czech Republic, will be without the services of this fine winger. With the World Junior Championships in Czechia this year, you can be sure that Repik was fired up to lead the Czechs in that tourney.
I also wonder if this injury will have long-term repercussions on Repik's game. He's been a man on a mission since the beginning of last year's postseason. Already, Repik has 39 points in 30 games this season, and has been utilizing his speed on a nightly basis. Unlike past seasons, Repik seems to want to take charge and play hard just about every single night. It's not a stretch to compare him to the likes of Milan Hejduk or Marek Svatos.

Vancouver Giants Win the Memorial Cup
Just as the title suggests, the Vancouver Giants got the ultimate revenge for losing the WHL title to the Medicine Hat Tigers by winning the Memorial Cup by a 3-1 score tonight.This caps off a dream season for the Giants, who will now face the loss of many of their great veterans to the AHL, University hockey, or other pro hockey outlets.
The tournament also set a Memorial Cup record. Yep, it was nice to get a taste of some hockey success in this city. Perhaps the Canucks can take a cue.

The Vancouver Giants won the 2007 MasterCard Memorial Cup in front of a hometown crowd as they defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers 3-1 in the Championship game on Sunday, May 27th at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, B.C.
Czech winger Michal Repik broke a 1-1 tie with under five minutes to go in the third period, beating Tigers’ netminder Matt Keetley with a wrap-around that went through the five hole, while Spencer Machacek put the game away with a late empty-net goal.
With the victory, the Giants – the tournament’s host team - exact some revenge on the Tigers, who won the 2007 WHL championship with a dramatic double overtime win in Game 7 over the Giants in Medicine Hat.
The Giants stormed out of the gate, out-shooting the Tiger by a 17-5 margin in the opening period, but could not solve Keetley, who was superb in turning aside 37 of 39 shots he faced to keep his team in the contest.
Tyson Sexsmith made 14 saves for the Giants in the victory, turning aside only two Tigers shots in the third period.
Giants’ winger Milan Lucic, who picked up an assist on Repik’s game-winner, was named the MVP of the 2007 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament. The Boston Bruins’ prospect from Vancouver scored notched two goals and eight points in the tournament, and set the tone for the Giants in the Championship game with several big hits early on.
Yes, congrats to Milan "L-Train" Lucic to winning the MVP award for the tournament. The rest of the country got a true chance to see what kind of beast this guy is.

Tigers Claw WHL Title from Giants

You'd never know that both the Medicine Hat Tigers and Vancouver Giants were both already guaranteed a spot in the Memorial Cup as they went the distance to settle the WHL Finals.
Game 7, Double OT...too bad the Tigers came out on top with a 3-2 win. :^(
This series was tremendous, with both teams giving everything they had, and the Tigers fighting back from a 3-2 series deficit to take the final 2 games at home. It didn't help that Cody Franson was out with injury, and the Giants were playing with 5 d-men for most of the final game.
The Giants had a 2-1 lead in the 3rd period of Game Seven, but the Tigers showed a lot of desperation and basically took the tide of the game from then on. The loss prevented the Giants from repeating as WHL champs.
The game featured quite a few fog delays in the overtimes, reminiscent of the Buffalo Sabres foggy playoff games of the 70s. The refs called on the players from both teams to skate around and dissipate the fog.
Matt Keetley, the 20-year old goalie for the Tigers, was named Playoff MVP.
In terms of playoff performances among Giants prospects ...
Michal Repik, who slid in the CSS final rankings, led all playoff scorers with 16 assists and 26 points in 22 games. He was using his speed well to create offence all playoffs long.
Kenddal McArdle and Wacey Rabbit led all goal scorers with 11.
Cody Franson was either injured or not nearly as effective with just 7 points in 19 games. Ever since he came back from the WJC, he hasn't been the same player as he was before. What happened over there?
Mario Bliznak, the late Canucks pick, had 12 points in 22 games and was his awesome defensive self. He's still a long shot, but definitely one for Canucks fans to keep an eye on. He works very hard and showed some offensive ability in tight situations.
Now, both teams need to recover for the Memorial Cup, which starts here on Friday.
So, congrats to the Tigers, and may you have bad luck in the Memorial Cup ;)
PS: Bonus points to the Tigers music director who played Boney M's Rasputin before the first overtime, as well as some other 80s hits. The Giants or Canucks need to hire this guy.

Vancouver's Daily Double

Ahhh... I love it when the Giants and Canucks both win in the same night.
Yep, lost in the Canucks double-OT win was the fact that the Vancouver Giants beat up on the Prince George Cougars to advance to the WHL finals. Go figure that they did it in 5 games, just as they did to Seattle and Chilliwack. They are off to Medicine Hat to face the Tigers, giving them a fourth chance to make an animal extinct (Bruins, Thunderbirds, Cougars... go Giants!)
Racey Wacey Rabbit was on frickin fire in this series, scoring six times and adding two assists in the five games. Is he gonna make the NHL? probably not, but that doesn't mean he isn't kickin some butt in the junior ranks.
Most of the other Canucks bloggers (and that drunken Duck blogger) have had their say on last night's win over the Ducks, so I don't need to ramble on too long. Most of what I had to say is over at The NHL Fanhouse. If you don't visit that site thrice a day, you better start, lest I get Jan Bulis on your ass.
Trevor Linden is, after Roberto Luongo, THE MAN. No, not the one that oppresses you, but the one who is clutch in the playoffs. While the Sedin's are snoozing away, Linden sets up OT winners and works his ass off. The Canucks better bring him back next season.
Nice pass by Chris Pronger on the Naslund goal.
Jeff Cowan is an uber streaky scorer. He goes like 3 months without a goal, and then scores a whole bunch during a week-long stretch. Does this coincide with moon phases?
How about them Thrashers? *snicker*
The Canucks couldn't bury chances, couldn't score on the Power Play, took bad penalties, kept giving up good chances, and still won the game!! If you don't watch the Canucks much, then you probably don't realize that they win 95% of their games like this. Somehow, the Canucks just find ways to win despite looking about as co-ordinated as Chris Wells in a puck control relay.
(Bonus points if anyone gets that reference)

Playoff Fever in Vancouver

Lost in all of the Canucks hoopla is the fact that the Vancouver Giants have now cruised into the 3rd round of the WHL playoffs after dispatching both the Chilliwack Bruins and Seattle Thunderbirds in 5 games apiece.
As much as I enjoy watching the Canucks, there is no way I'm going to get tickets at GM Place for $20 or less. The NHL playoffs also have as much fighting as a chess match and as much scoring as a comic book convention. zzzz...
The best player, by far, has been Kendall McArdle. After a pretty 'blah' post-trade regular season (22 points in 37 games), McArdle leads the Giants in playoff scoring with 13 points in 10 games.
The Canucks, on the other hand, sucked popsicles last night. Sure, they had 35 shots on Turco, but most of them were floaters from 40 feet away. Without Cooke and Burrows, many Canucks simply weren't driving to the net hard enough.
I was quite impressed with this Jannick Hansen fellow, however. He showed good speed and some drive to the net. Trevor Linden ought to take notes.
The refs also sucked ass, calling some of the most questionable penalties I've seen since the last time I watched a soccer mathc. Bring back Kerry Fraser!

The Canucks, on the other hand, sucked popsicles last night. Sure, they had 35 shots on Turco, but most of them were floaters from 40 feet away. Without Cooke and Burrows, many Canucks simply weren't driving to the net hard enough.
I was quite impressed with this Jannick Hansen fellow, however. He showed good speed and some drive to the net. Trevor Linden ought to take notes.
The refs also sucked ass, calling some of the most questionable penalties I've seen since the last time I watched a soccer mathc. Bring back Kerry Fraser!

Video of the Day - Teddy Bear Toss Chaos
On Friday night, I went to the Giants game with a couple of buddies of mine.
It was Teddy Bear Toss night, and there were just under 11,000 people there.
My friend, Duc, posted this video of the ensuing chaos.

The Vancouver Giants hosted the Everett Silvertips in a matchup between the two top teams in Canadian junior hockey. Over 10,000 people watched the game at the Pacific Coliseum; the fact that a few of the top players from each time were at training camps for the upcoming World Junior Championship did not deter from the playoff-like atmosphere.

The Giants played a very good game and set up a penalty killing clinic that night. However, the Giants could only kill penalties for so long until the Silvertips tied it up 1-1 in the third period.
The Giants lost the game on a shootout, the real winners that night are the children receiving the teddy bears
